What they are
Smile lines, sometimes called laugh lines, are static/in set wrinkle folds that form primarily around the side of the mouth.
Common Causes
- Aging– natural loss of volume/collagen that occurs in the face as we age tends to appear in this area
- Facial expressions– repetitive facial expressions such as smiling cause this area to wrinkle into a deeper fold
- Genetics– some people genetically inherit more dominant smile lines than other individuals
- Extreme weight loss– loosing a lot of weight in the face can cause a reduction of fat in this area, thus leading to deeper lines and laxity which enhances the severity of the line/fold

How to treat smile lines
Dermal Filler
Dermal filler is a great option for correcting and softening smile lines because it restores loss volume and adds structure where structure is missing. A good injector will look at the whole face to add harmony and balance to make sure results appear natural.
ResurFX
ResurFX is a treatment option for individuals with mild smile lines and/or trying to prevent smile lines from forming or worsening. This is a non-ablative resurfacing treatment that causes controlled wounds in the second layer of the skin, which in return stimulates collagen and elastin fiber production. The collagen and elastin help to rebuild the lost volume that causes the smile lines. 3-6 treatments are recommended, and this is is not a great option if smile lines are deep.
RF Microneedling
